Breed History The intentional start of this breed began in the 1980s in Australia from a man named Wally Conran who was trying to breed a therapy dog for a Client with allergies.
So he bred a Labrador with a poodle, seemingly 29 out of 31 of those first crosses became successfull therapy dogs, so the mix worked well to produce therapy dogs.
First crosses of any breed will allways be hit & miss depending on what parent the offspring takes after, looks size colour temperament low shedding coat are just a few of the issues that will be extremely variable.
In this early breeding cross only one of the puppies introduced did not trigger the clients allergies, as per my earlier point, the puppies were pretty variable & thats in just one of the many other possible variation issues.
In the 1990s other dog breeds were bred into the Labradoodle bloodlines for better confirmation coat & temperament, Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel & English Cocker Spaniel.
But you cannot compare in anyway The Multigeneration Australian Labradoodle that has been developed & is being bred today, to the dogs from any first cross Labrador & poodle.
Under the strict ethics of Wala & other breed associations they have carefully developed this breed over many years & generations only choosing the very best of the litter to pass on thier genetic blueprint. Now Multigeneration Pure Australian Labradoodles look absolutely nothing like that first cross, they are intensively Dna Health Tested for Health & correct coats & only bred under strict rules by ethical breeders who are dedicated to protect the breed. The consistances now in these puppies are uniform just exactly the same as in any other breed.
For anyone that has been aware of the information in the media regarding the first intentional breeder of the F1 Labradoodle & his comments regarding this, please be aware that the Authentic Australian Labradoodle has now progressed far beyond breedng A labrador with a Poodle .The Authentic Australian Labradoodle is now a long standing multigeneration breed, registered with organisations across the World that adhere to strict standards for its breeder members.
The Breed cannot be compared to that first experiment, it is important to recognise the vast difference between what was then & now.
